Behavioral Intervention, In-Home Outreach & School District Consultation

The following is a referral list for providers of behavioral intervention.  The agencies listed here have been recommended by other parents and have agreed to be on this referral list.  Please contact their offices to inquire about specific information.  The description of services is listed exactly as submitted by professionals or as found in their literature.

A note about consultations

In-Home

Behavioral teaching done in the home often involving discrete trial teaching and other principles of applied behavior analysis.  For the in-home services, you, as a parent, will want to make sure that the program you choose is able to both meet the needs of your child and fit in with your personal family situation.  Because no required NJ certification exists and there is no formal criteria that an individual consultant needs to meet regarding the application of applied behavior analysis, COSAC does not maintain an extensive list of individual behavioral consultants.
You may wish to network with other parents at COSAC sponsored support groups and workshops, etc., to obtain names of individual behavioral consultants.  An additional resource for ABA Therapist and Consultant referrals is ABA Job Connections (via Yahoo Groups), an online group designed for parents and professionals to post “help wanted” or “services available” listings for ABA therapists and consultants.

Functional Assessment/Crisis Intervention

This comment denotes whether or not the agency provides consultation for challenging behaviors in the home and/or school setting.

Functional Assessment

Functional assessment helps identify what a child is communicating through their inappropriate behaviors.  In turn, this allows one to identify and teach an appropriate replacement behavior that will communicate the same information.  To conduct a functional assessment of a behavior, look closely at the conditions surrounding a behavior.  What happens just before a behavior occurs?  What happens just after the behavior?  Over time, do patterns emerge?  Does the behavior occur each time the child’s toy is taken away?  Does the behavior result in the child’s toy being returned?  If so, this suggests that the behavior is communicating, “Give me back my toy.”
An important point to remember about functional assessment involves what to do with your results.  These results should guide you towards a skill that can be taught and reinforces to replace the problematic behavior.  All interventions based on functional assessment should involve teaching an appropriate behavior that will take the place of the target behavior.
